EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chad Simmons has been named the new principal at Veterans High School and will start in June — he replaces Dr. Amy Barbour, who is moving to the Director of School Operations role for Houston County School District.  WGXA
  • Morgan Aeschlimann will become principal at Matt Arthur Primary School in June when Alicia Connor moves to a district leadership role. The Houston County native brings 20 years of experience in teaching and administration — including roles at Lake Joy Primary and Eagle Springs Elementary.  WGXA
  • K-5 students in the service areas (Bibb, Crawford, Dooly, Houston, Macon, Peach, Pulaski, Taylor and Wilcox) can join the 'Soil. Where it all Begins.' poster contest and must send in entries by March 2; winners will receive a cash prize and advance to the state contest.  WGXA
  • The Houston County Board of Education named Dr. Artia Shorter principal of Lake Joy Elementary School, effective this June. She brings over a decade of district experience (in teaching, literacy, and leadership) to support the school community.  WGXA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Public Health released a Restaurant Report Card for Middle Georgia on Feb. 2-6 showing that scores ranged from 69 (unsatisfactory) to 100, with several local Warner Robins establishments earning perfect marks.  41NBC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Houston County won 15-0 in its season opener against Warner Robins on Monday night — the team combined a no-hitter with early scoring, and coach Matt Hopkins praised his young squad's performance. Warner Robins will play at Veterans later today at 6 p.m.  The Houston Home Journal
  • All Houston County basketball teams ended their regular season and now face postseason tournaments beginning with play-in games on Feb. 9 and semifinals on Feb. 11. Warner Robins team earned a bye while Houston County boys clinched top seed in Region 2-5A and will play on Feb. 12.  The Houston Home Journal
