ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A fast-moving wildfire in Brantley County destroyed at least 47 homes and forced several families to evacuate earlier this week. A Houston County family was among those impacted, and local officials are coordinating recovery efforts (donations are welcome to support rebuilding). 13WMAZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State officials announced a 30-day burn ban that restricts outdoor burning in 91 counties including Middle Georgia; the order, issued April 22, will expire May 22 at 11:59 p.m. The Commission reported 46 new wildfires that ignited 1,080 acres, warning residents to follow the ban to prevent dangerous fire conditions. - ➤ Gov. Kemp declared a state of emergency yesterday after wildfires and drought threatened parts of Central and South Georgia, allowing the National Guard to send troops+resources to aid local firefighters. State officials plan to battle thousands of acres of burning land while protecting homes+communities. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Residents in Kathleen raised concerns after the city approved a gas station & retail center near homes, schools, and a church. Over 400 neighbors signed a petition, saying the project poses traffic and safety risks and should include a noise-reducing buffer. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Dublin VA center held a quarterly Veterans Town Hall yesterday (3:30-5 p.m.) at American Legion Post 3 on Thomaston Rd in Macon where veterans and the public learned about benefits and enrollment options. The next session will be in Perry on July 22. WGXA
