A fast-moving wildfire in Brantley County destroyed at least 47 homes and forced several families to evacuate earlier this week.

A Houston County family was among those impacted, and local officials are coordinating recovery efforts (donations are welcome to support rebuilding).

State officials announced a 30-day burn ban that restricts outdoor burning in 91 counties including Middle Georgia; the order, issued April 22, will expire May 22 at 11:59 p.m. The Commission reported 46 new wildfires that ignited 1,080 acres, warning residents to follow the ban to prevent dangerous fire conditions.

Gov. Kemp declared a state of emergency yesterday after wildfires and drought threatened parts of Central and South Georgia, allowing the National Guard to send troops+resources to aid local firefighters.
