COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Heart of Georgia Hospice is set to combine its thrift store and administrative office under one roof at 1725 Watson Boulevard this fall, with services continuing without disruption. The nonprofit expects a seamless move to boost teamwork and community support. The Houston Home Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division starts an open burn ban in central Georgia — including our locality — to cut ozone pollution. Residents and businesses must avoid burning yard debris until Sept. 30 and use safer alternatives. WGXA
- ➤ Today, Middle Georgia shows worsening drought conditions with all counties in severe drought or worse and a mandatory burn ban in effect until May 22. A low-pressure system is expected Friday evening to bring brief beneficial rain, though more moisture is needed to ease water shortages. WGXA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Houston County has a 30-day mandatory burn ban in effect for outdoor burning as wildfires in nearby Brantley and Clinch counties raise fire concerns. Fire Chief Chris Stoner said his team is aiding containment efforts & using controlled back-burning to help stop the spread. The Houston Home Journal
- ➤ A Warner Robins disabled veteran said he was turned away from Church's Chicken on Watson Boulevard in May when his service dog was not accepted, prompting a complaint and a DOJ review. The restaurant later agreed to a $2,000 penalty and must update its service animal policy to meet federal law. 13WMAZ
- ➤ Indian Oaks Apartments LTD and its management firms settled discrimination charges by agreeing to pay $750,000 after a HUD investigation found they denied a mother’s request for a ground-floor unit for her child with a mobility-impairing disability in Fort Valley (near Warner Robins). The settlement requires training and policy reviews. WGXA

- ➤ Atrium Health Navicent offers virtual therapy at Houston County schools during school hours, after hours, & over the summer to make mental health care easier for students and families. - ➤ High school baseball playoffs in Central Georgia continue as teams vie for a championship title. Bleckley County swept Heard County in Class A DI + Wilcox County swept Manchester and Towns County in Class A DII while teams in Classes AA, AAA and AAAAA also advanced. 13WMAZ
