  • In Houston County, less than six months into 2025, 10 people were killed in homicides+ Sheriff Matt Moulton said the spike is unusual+ and his office is investigating the cases.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Houston County Public Library System launched its Vacation Reading Program to help over 4,000 kids maintain reading skills during summer break & avoid a summer slide. Director Sara Paulk said magician Ken Scott will perform on June 9 at all three branches & local sponsors will offer incentives to encourage participation.  The Houston Home Journal
  • Houston County Superintendent Dr. Mark Scott is set to retire at the end of this week after 11 years of service where he led school improvements and raised graduation rates—efforts that supported both teachers and students. He will join Central Georgia Technical College as Vice President for Strategic Initiatives to plan a new STEM Allied Healthcare project—an initiative aimed at strengthening workforce development in local schools.  The Houston Home Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Houston Healthcare will join Emory Healthcare system on June 1—integrating its Warner Robins and Perry campuses with Emory’s network after receiving final regulatory approval from the Georgia Attorney General’s Office. Officials said there will be no layoffs as the upgrade to the Epic electronic health record system expands care for over 300,000 patients.  13WMAZ

  • Stratford boys soccer senior Adi Patel was named Athlete of the Week after his leadership helped his team reach the state title game even though they lost to St. Anne-Pacelli—he said trust and time management were key to his success. He will study Biology at the University of Georgia.  13WMAZ
