CRIME NEWS

  • On May 30, Georgia Arson Control rewarded three eyewitnesses with $14,000 for reporting the January 2021 fire that killed Lisa Brooks and destroyed her home—officials credited their testimony with helping secure a life sentence for Spencer Brooks, who was convicted of murder, aggravated assault, and arson. Houston County officials praised the teamwork of the police and fire departments for their role in the investigation.  The Houston Home Journal
  • Renaldo Smith, 34, from Houston County was convicted for shooting at officers during his January 2023 arrest and barricading himself in his home—he received a 60-year sentence after a jury reached its verdict in under two hours.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Museum of Aviation is hosting its annual summer STEM camps that started June 2 and will run weekly for five weeks to teach children from kindergarten through high school about science, technology, engineering and math. Deputy Director Melissa Raburn said the camps include hands-on projects like robotics and Space Bots with help from sponsors such as Flint Energies.  The Houston Home Journal
  • Evalee Nash, a Perry High School senior, won a $2,500 scholarship from WoodmanLife on May 28 at Perry City Hall, making her one of 15 second-place winners chosen from 600 students nationwide (her award recognizes strong grades and community service). She plans to study biology at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to become a veterinarian.  The Houston Home Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 2, the City Council approved a plan to beautify utility boxes by wrapping them in local art—sponsored by businesses—to deter graffiti and build pride. The meeting also saw the police department receive new body cameras and portable radios and celebrated officer recognitions with the swearing in of three new officers.  The Houston Home Journal

  • Northside High School will host a football alumni reunion on Aug. 16 with a tailgate beginning at 5 p.m. at McConnell-Talbert Stadium—later, the team will honor longtime head coach Conrad Nix during halftime as they take on Eagles Landing at 7:30 p.m.  41NBC
