- ➤ Memorial Heights Baptist Church in Perry celebrated 70 years with a combined homecoming service last Sunday that had double its usual attendance and a special meal, as Pastor Lewis Kiger recalled the church’s humble start in 1955 when a small group first met in a basement. - ➤ At the July 8 meeting, Houston County Commissioners heard from 402nd Software Engineering Group Director Mike Doubleday — who explained his team’s work on software for military aircraft and UAVs — and the commissioners honored his service. In new business, the board approved Special Exception Applications, a right-of-way abandonment in Elko, a lease agreement with Oaky Woods Wildlife Management Area for the hunting season, and opioid training for 12 Centerville Police officers using $5,400 from the county opioid settlement special reserve fund. - ➤ Middle Georgia State announced on July 10th it will join NCAA Division II and remain a full member of the Peach Belt Conference during a three-year provisional period this fall. The move will give 10 teams new local rivalries and higher competition—coach Scott Moe said—and they will be eligible for the NCAA post season beginning in 2028-29. 13WMAZ
