EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Houston County School District welcomed back its teachers and staff on July 23 at Southside Baptist Church, where they introduced the new theme 'together, we can' for the 2025–2026 school year and honored District Teacher of the Year Amber Washington along with other top educators. Superintendent Richard Rodgers shared his plan for the coming year, including a 1% raise and a one-time $1,000 bonus for full-time staff — his words stressed that strong bonds will help the district move forward. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a recent meeting, Houston County Commissioners approved landfill rate adjustments—curbside waste will cost $26.97, commercial waste will cost $30.97, and the out-of-county host fee will rise from $4.00 to $5.00 per ton effective October 25—to help cover capital improvements, and they also approved a memorandum for a Family Treatment Court with an $89,000 payment from the Opioid Settlement Fund. Chairman Dan Perdue said the Board will set the millage rate next month and closed out FY25 by writing off small amounts of bad debt. The Houston Home Journal
