CRIME NEWS

  • Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton said DNA from mother Connie Wallace was submitted for testing on skeletal remains found off I-75 in Peach County to check for a match to her missing 37-year-old son Dustin Wallace, who disappeared in August 2021 after a ride to a Publix parking lot—investigators expect results soon as his mother holds on to hope for closure.  13WMAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Georgia lawmakers passed House Bill 268 to strengthen school safety and student well-being, and the law went into effect this month—educators and mental health experts met on Wednesday in Middle Georgia to plan how to implement the new measures while addressing local challenges. This discussion focused on critical issues such as school ratings, absenteeism, and limited access to support services.  WGXA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Houston County animal services director Alan Smith said calls about wildlife such as deer—raccoons, possums, and armadillos are rising as new homes push these animals out of their natural habitats. The three-person department serving over 160,000 residents recommends using HERL methods—habitat modification, exclusion, repellent removal, and lethal control—to reduce unwanted wildlife encounters.  WGXA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Houston County Schools are back in session and the Warner Robins Police Department said school zone cameras are active at Huntington Middle School, Northside High School, Warner Robins High School and Lake Joy Elementary (operating from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) to catch speeding drivers. The cameras ticket drivers going 11 mph over the limit and have generated $2.3 million in fines since June 2023 while reducing speeding in school zones.  13WMAZ
