CRIME NEWS

  • Perry High School went into lockdown on Friday afternoon after a swatting call led police from Perry, Warner Robins, Houston County and the Georgia State Patrol to check the school—students were safely dismissed and no threat was found.  WGXA
  • Today, police at the Galleria Mall in Centerville negotiated with an armed man—asking residents to steer clear of the parking lot while efforts to secure his surrender continued.  WGXA
  • Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton said a man was shot and killed at Galleria Mall in Centerville after a standoff that began at 5:30 a.m. on Friday—GBI is investigating the case.  13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Houston County leaders plan to raise property taxes by 11.18% after a required reassessment showed higher market values; the new rate will fund six sheriff's deputies and nine firefighters to improve emergency response. Residents can share input at public hearings on Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the county annex (200 Carl Vinson Parkway, Warner Robins) and on Aug. 26 at 9 a.m. at the county courthouse.  WGXA
  • Houston County Commission announced a plan to raise property taxes by 11.18% over the rollback rate even as the maintenance and operations millage drops from 8.501 to 8.45 mills — many nonexempt homeowners could see an extra $68 on a $200,000 home while those with a homestead exemption will not be affected. Public hearings are set for Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the county annex in Warner Robins and Aug. 26 at 9 a.m. at the county courthouse in Perry.  13WMAZ
