COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Houston County Sheriff's Office's non-profit Operation Arresting Hunger hosted its 13th annual car wash fundraiser at Camp Bow Wow on September 6, where vendors, food trucks, and pet adoptions were on offer and donations helped dunk officials such as Perry Police Chief Alan Everidge—District Attorney Eric Edwards and Sheriff Matt Moulton. The event raised funds to support Thanksgiving meals for local families.  The Houston Home Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • 59-year-old Willis Jermaine Curry Jr, a seven-time convicted felon, pleaded guilty on Sept. 4 in Houston County Court after stealing a vehicle from a La Quinta Inn parking lot in Perry on June 18—and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison with an additional five years of probation during which he will be banned from Houston County.  The Houston Home Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayoral candidate Fabian Velazquez is calling for change in Warner Robins—he aims to fix crime, crumbling roads, and high housing costs by promoting a walkable downtown and better zoning. He will debate current mayor Larhonda Patrick on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. at The Winning Church in the city.  WPGA
  • On Sept.2, Warner Robins City Council tabled a rezoning request for a 24-acre property at the intersection of Corder and S. Houston Lake Road due to concerns over heavy traffic and high residential density—staff had recommended the change while council members raised issues about access and congestion. The council will consider traffic studies and road widening options, and may revisit the rezoning request at the meeting on Sept.15.  The Houston Home Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Local baker Corey Jones of Sweet Evelyns (known for his creative treats) will compete on Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship starting Monday, Sept. 15 with episodes streaming on HBO Max the next day. Jones, who previously competed on Food Network’s Christmas Cookie Challenge (using his spooky style), aims to win the $25,000 prize while celebrating his favorite holiday.  The Houston Home Journal
