COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, fairgoers braved rain at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry as they enjoyed interactive exhibits and classic fair food. Program coordinator Nicole Duvall led the Mobile Dairy Classroom while longtime visitors from Warner Robins celebrated tradition — the fair runs through Sunday, Oct 12.  13WMAZ
  • Haven Hope House, Warner Robins' first full-service homeless shelter, will open Oct. 17 to offer beds, meals — and support to help people rebuild their lives.  13WMAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • For 13 years the DeGuire family has made the Georgia National Fair their art battleground at the Miller-Murphy-Howard Building as siblings compete in crafts with prize money up to $100 per entry—this year they plan to display 25 pieces and are already preparing for the next fair.   13WMAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Warner Robins residents heard from city candidates at a NAACP meet and greet where they discussed local growth and civic issues (the panel included Mayor LaRhonda Patrick, mayoral candidate Fabian Velazquez, and council members Keith Lauritsen, Derek Mack, and Clifford Holmes).  The Houston Home Journal
  • Today the city announced that it will pause utility disconnects and waive late fees for federal workers affected by the shutdown—those impacted must show proper federal documentation. City Administrator James Drinkard said the relief plan will continue until the shutdown ends and may adjust if it lasts longer.  The Houston Home Journal
  • Governor Brian Kemp cut the ribbon to open the 36th Georgia National Fair on Oct 2 in Perry (with many government officials and community members present) and Agriculture Authority Chairman Foster Rhodes said the fair will draw 500,000 visitors over 11 days (even though Robins Air Force Base missed the ceremony due to a government shutdown). Kemp also announced that new federal block grants worth $531 million will help farmers recover after Hurricane Helene.  The Houston Home Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Photos show teams playing week eight of Friday Night Football in Houston County (with game action visible) and local fans cheering (capturing community spirit).  The Houston Home Journal
  • GHSA State Executive Committee met Monday and reversed a 2023 decision by restoring the seven classification system and adopting the post season ranking formula for playoff seeding with votes of 18 to 0 and 68 to 0 — the change will affect playoff spots for teams like Warner Robins and Perry as new seeding rules take effect from 2026 through 2028.  The Houston Home Journal
  • Wayne County beat Perry 16-3 in the Region 1-4A championship in Houston County yesterday, ending the season’s region races. The postseason looms with five Houston County teams set to compete—Westfield will play all its games at South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus from Oct. 16 to Oct. 18.  The Houston Home Journal
